Sapphire
Sapphire is one of the Big 3 with ruby plus emerald. It is durable, the best-known blue gem, plus found in most colors.
What to look for
Color
Velvety blue to violetish blue, medium to medium dark, strong to vivid.
Clarity
Most have some inclusions. Very clean blue sapphires are rare plus valuable.
Cut
Cut to show even color plus good brightness.
Carat
Fine stones in larger sizes rise sharply in price.
