What to look for
Color
Judged by hue, tone plus saturation. Vivid colors are the most prized.
Clarity
Matters less than color, yet still counts.
Cut
Often cut to deepen the color, not only for sparkle.
Carat
One carat is 0.20 grams. Large vivid stones are very rare.
