Amethyst
Amethyst is all about its rich, velvety purple. Even color with no visible zoning from above is what you want.
What to look for
Color
The finest is a strong purple or reddish purple. No brown tints. Too dark and it looks black in dim light.
Clarity
Most faceted amethyst is eye clean. Visible inclusions in pale stones lower value a lot.
Cut
Comes in many shapes, plus custom cuts.
Carat
Big stones cost little more per carat than small ones. Great for bold designs.
