Garnet
Garnet is a group of minerals, so looks vary widely. The easiest way in is color.
What to look for
Color
Pyrope plus almandine run purple to orangy red. Spessartine is orange. Grossular goes all the way to vibrant green.
Clarity
Red garnets are usually eye clean. Some orange garnets often show inclusions.
Cut
Many red garnets come in standard shapes plus sizes, so they set easily.
Carat
Demantoid plus tsavorite are rare in large sizes, so value climbs fast with size.
