The 4Cs, explained like a friend would explain them

You walk into a shop in Dubai. Someone slides a report across the glass. Suddenly you are looking at letters plus numbers instead of a diamond. Let us fix that.

The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, created one shared language for diamonds in the 1950s. Four value factors. Colour, clarity, cut plus carat weight. Every serious lab still speaks it.

Colour is really about how little colour you see

GIA grades colourless diamonds on a D-to-Z scale. Graders compare each stone to masterstones under controlled light. D is the top. Z has a noticeable tint.

Here is the part nobody tells you. Once a stone is set, a near-colourless grade still reads white. Warm yellow gold makes that even truer. So you rarely need to chase D.

Clarity is a map, not a score

Clarity grades come from the number, size, relief plus position of inclusions seen under 10x magnification. Think of inclusions as a birthmark. Where it sits matters more than how big it is.

A tiny crystal near the edge hides under a prong. A feather right under the table does not. That is why we look at the plotted diagram, then the stone, then the price.

Cut is the only C made by human hands

Proportions, symmetry plus polish decide how a diamond performs. Cut quality gives you brightness, the white light returned, fire, the flashes of colour, plus scintillation, the sparkle that dances as you move.

Carat weighs a diamond, it does not measure size

One carat equals 0.20 grams. Prices jump at round numbers, so a 0.95 ct stone often costs far less than a 1.00 ct stone plus looks the same across a dinner table.

How we spend a budget at the atelier

• Buy the cut first. It is the sparkle you actually see.
• Sit one grade below the top on colour, then let the metal do the rest.
• Choose eye-clean over paper-perfect on clarity.
• Land just under a round carat weight plus put the saving into the setting.
