Buying colored gemstones in Dubai, a clear guide

Dubai sits on one of the oldest gem trade routes in the world. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds plus rare stones pass through the city every day. That means real choice. It also means you need to know what you are looking at.
This guide walks you through it. Where to look, what to ask, what to check plus how to turn a beautiful stone into a piece you will wear for life.
Where to buy colored gemstones in Dubai
You have three main options. Each one suits a different buyer.
- The Gold Souk in Deira. Lively, full of choice plus great for browsing. Quality varies a lot from shop to shop.
- Mall jewelers. Polished plus convenient. Most sell finished pieces, so the stone choice is already made for you.
- A bespoke atelier. You choose the stone first, then the jewelry is designed around it. This is how we work at Studio ALOI.
If you want one special stone set in a piece that fits you, an atelier gives you the most control. You see several stones side by side, you get honest advice, plus you only pay for the piece you actually want.
Color comes first
With colored gemstones, color drives value more than anything else. Look at three things. Hue is the color itself. Tone is how light or dark it is. Saturation is how strong it is.
The finest stones show a pure, vivid color that is neither too light nor too dark. Look at the stone in daylight plus under warm light. A great stone looks good in both.

Clarity, cut plus size
Colored stones are judged differently from diamonds. Many have small inclusions, and that is normal. Emeralds almost always do. What matters is that the stone looks lively to your eye.
A good cut brings the color to life. Tilt the stone. It should sparkle across its whole face, with no dull, see-through window in the middle. Size matters too, but a smaller stone with better color often looks far richer than a big pale one.
Ask about treatment
Many gemstones are treated to improve color or clarity. Heating sapphires plus oiling emeralds are common and accepted in the trade. The key is that you are told. A treated stone should never be sold as untreated.
Always ask. Is it treated? How? Is it written down? A good seller answers clearly plus puts it in writing.
Get a lab report for important stones
For any significant stone, ask for a report from an independent gem lab such as GIA, Gübelin, SSEF or GRS. The report confirms what the stone is, notes any treatment plus can state origin when the lab can support it.
Match the report to the stone. Check the weight, the measurements plus the shape. If they do not line up, walk away.

Choose a stone you will wear
Think about daily life. Sapphire plus ruby are very hard, so they suit everyday rings. Emerald, opal plus tanzanite are softer and love a protective setting or a pendant. Tell your jeweler how you live and they will guide you.
What shapes the price
Color comes first, then size, clarity plus cut. Rarity, treatment plus origin can change the price a lot. The best way to understand it is to see real stones side by side. We walk you through every option at a private appointment, so there are no surprises.
From loose stone to your own jewelry
A loose gemstone is only half the story. At our Dubai atelier we source the stone with you, draw the design, then make the piece by hand. Ring, pendant, earrings or something new. You can also bring a stone you already own.

Is Dubai a good place to buy colored gemstones?
Yes. Dubai is a major gem trading hub, so you get wide choice. Buy from someone who shows lab reports plus discloses treatments in writing.
Which gemstone is best for an everyday ring?
Sapphire plus ruby are the toughest colored stones and suit daily wear. Softer stones look beautiful in pendants plus earrings.
Can I bring my own gemstone to be set?
Yes. We check it first, then design the piece around it.
Do you help source a specific stone?
Yes. Tell us the stone, color plus feeling you want. We find options plus show them to you side by side.
