A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness, same sparkle. It grows in a machine over weeks instead of in the earth over a very long time.

Where they part ways

• Price. Lab-grown usually costs a fraction of a comparable natural stone, so your budget stretches.
• Rarity. A natural stone is finite. That is the part people are really buying.
• Resale. Natural diamonds hold a trade value. Lab-grown prices have kept falling as production grows.
• Disclosure. Any honest seller states which one you are holding, in writing, every time.

The question that usually decides it

Ask yourself this. Do you want the biggest, brightest stone your budget allows, or do you want the one that came out of the ground? Both answers are fine. Only one of them is yours.
